Harley-Davidson and Hero MotoCorp Unveil Customizable X440 in India

In July 2023, Harley-Davidson and Hero MotoCorp officially introduced the X440 in the Indian market. This model is significant for both companies as it is Harley-Davidson's smallest modern motorcycle and the only one in its lineup with a single-cylinder engine. It also marks the first collaboration between Hero MotoCorp and Harley-Davidson.

India is known for being one of the largest motorcycle markets in the world, with a strong enthusiast base that prefers smaller bikes with affordable price tags. The release of the X440 allows more people to experience the iconic Bar and Shield brand due to its accessible price, size, and performance. It was only a matter of time before customization of the X440 began, as it is a bike that invites personalization.

While the stock X440 is already visually appealing, its neo-retro design makes it an ideal canvas for customization, similar to Royal Enfield's classic-inspired motorcycles. Harley-Davidson recently teased an upcoming custom build based on the X440, showcasing the bike's versatility beyond the traditional chopper style typically associated with the brand.

The custom build, created by Rajputana Customs, takes the form of a scrambler with increased ground clearance and rugged components for an off-road-ready appearance. Rajputana Customs, a renowned workshop in Jaipur, has a portfolio of various custom builds, including cruisers, bobbers, and sportbikes. The custom X440 is expected to be unveiled at the India Bike Week 2023 in December.

Rajputana Customs has been building bikes for 14 years and has completed over 150 custom builds. The custom X440 is highly anticipated as it is the first official custom build using this platform, which is likely to spark a thriving aftermarket scene for the model.

The custom build by Rajputana Customs prioritizes both aesthetics and off-road performance. It features taller suspension with an Ohlins gas-charged monoshock, a new aluminum subframe and swingarm, and knobby tires on wire-spoke wheels for a rugged look and enhanced off-road capabilities. The custom build is expected to be lighter than the stock bike, weighing approximately 190.5 kilograms (420 pounds) when wet.

While no changes to the bike's performance have been mentioned, the X440 will likely retain its 440cc, air-cooled, single-cylinder engine. With 27 horsepower and 39 Nm (29 pound-feet) of torque, the bike offers ample power for enjoyable rides on both backcountry roads and beachside adventures.
